What To Expect

The National Archives Museum
Step through the doors of this majestic neoclassical building, considered a temple to American history. Follow your guide, starting at the National Archives Rotunda to learn about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution while standing in front of the perfectly-preserved documents from the 17th and 18th centuries. Alongside the Bill of Rights and the Federalist Papers, they all feature the signatures of world-famous statesmen like Alexander Hamilton.

Next, in the Public Vaults Exhibits, letters written by presidents including George Washington and John F. Kennedy are on display. The United States’ turbulent racial past comes alive while learning about the Emancipation Proclamation, which helped end slavery in the 19th century. More recent papers, like a citation issued to civil rights activist Rosa Parks, illustrates how long these racial issues lasted. Finally, in the Rubenstein Gallery, examine even older documents like the Magna Carta of 1297. Although it was written well before the Americas were even discovered by Europeans, it heavily influenced many of the other artifacts you’ll see in the National Archives.

Best way to do the Archives

So much better guided! Hearing the back story of the building, murals, historical context brought everything to life, especially for my 10 and 12 year olds. Highly recommend Maribeth, a retired lobbyist through multiple presidencies, she brought a rich and researched background, great for kids and adults. Well worth it and would do again, especially since our semi-private tour ended up private!
Fantastic experience

Our tour guide Donna was fantastic. She helped give context to the historical items on display through easy to follow stories. I thought she prioritized the time spent on the tour very well. Would definitely recommend.

Such a great experience for our family of eight. Richard was a wealth of knowledge and told many great stories. So glad we chose a guide for the National Archives, it was worth every penny. Thank you, R3!

Good experience. Guide showed great patience with a group containing some challenging individuals. Telling of the story of Independence and the creation of the Constitution was at times a bit garbled, but the main points were covered. As a Brit, I would say that the conflict between the American Colonies and Great Britain should not be characterised as a conflict with George III - Britain had a constitutional monarchy, and it was the policy of the British Government that enflamed relations, not the figure of the king (who did play some role). Just a small gripe!

Our incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide Richard kept my son and I fully immersed for two hours through the National Archives. What a treat to have such a warm and friendly "nerd" to thoroughly bring this amazing building to life.
