What To Expect

Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
Your guide will take you to visit the highlights of the collection, housed in a massive building that covers the area of 18 football fields. Gaze into the world-famous Hope Diamond, whose brilliant blue sparkle, and immodest size at 46 karats, captured the attention of former owner Marie Antoinette. Wander through the displays of gems and minerals, including the Dom Pedro Aquamarine, the world’s largest gem of its type, which glows brilliantly from within. Travel back in time to learn about death rituals while exploring real mummies from Ancient Egypt. Then step out of the past into the wild, exploring the mighty polar bears, elephants, and giraffes that roam across earth’s surface. From the land, jump into the sea at the Ocean Hall, where you’ll discover a live coral reef exhibit as well as a 45-ton whale, Phoenix, which is a replica of a real living what that the museum tracks. By the end, you’ll understand why so many people come to visit the 126.5 million artefacts housed at the National Museum of Natural History.

Worth every penny!!

I purchased this tour on a whim literally at 10pm the day before. I love museums but enjoy anything history so much more when someone is telling me a story so I figured this would be a great way to experience a different side of the museum we were looking forward to visiting most. Wonderful is an understatement. Richard was our tour guide and he was spectacular. Even from the day prior when he texted to introduce himself and confirm that I knew where the meetup location would be and so I had his contact should we get lost. From the start he was engaging, funny, and beyond knowledgeable. I think what really makes him so fabulous is that he’s obviously passionate about what he does and his enthusiasm is infectious. He was kind enough to store everyone’s jackets in a locker with his items and he made a point to stop and help everyone take photos together at interesting spots. He shared so many great stories and tid bits we wouldn’t otherwise have learned. If you’re going to splurge on anything during your trip to DC I highly encourage you to splurge on this!

Leigh was a great guide; informative and personable. Thoroughly enjoyed our museum visit. We got so much more out of our two hour visit than we could ever have on our own. Highly recommend!

We’ve done 5 tours during our visit. Richard was our guide for two of them and they were the most engaging and informative tours of all! He brought the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History to life with his stories! It’s an enormous museum. Having a knowledgeable guide provides a way to see the highlights and then come back on your own to explore more if you wish.
